HCP and MAYOR ROBERT F. SULLIVAN RESPOND TO THE HAITIAN PEOPLE

A magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck Haiti on Saturday, August 14, 2021, causing widespread destruction in the Caribbean country, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The death toll has risen to at least 2,200 as search and rescue teams raced to find survivors in collapsed buildings and rubble. At least 12,200 are injured, and hundreds are still missing. The earthquake is believed to have occurred along the same fault line as the devasting tremor 11 years ago. The magnitude 7.0 temblor that struck Haiti on the afternoon of January 12, 2010, was one more disaster in a country that has suffered from decades of political, economic, and social setbacks and inequalities.  Brockton Mayor Sullivan got on the phone with HCP President Marline Amedee with prayers and asked what the island needed.  Soon after, the mayor led a call for action, which included a PSA on Brockton Community Access requesting donations of health items, hygiene packages, baby formula, tents, tools, sleeping bags, clothing, and other non-perishable items.
